THEATRE #9 - This show has no ideas in it. Not even bad ones. I’m pretty sure if you assembled the talented cast and just told them to make up a show - no set, no costumes, no script, no director - it would be better than this mess.

THEATRE #8 - It’s fascinating to watch a show that was a visceral, shocking introduction to a burgeoning movement when it debuted in 1967, get transformed by Time into, basically, a museum piece. Hair is now a pageant, and its Son of God sacrifice symbolism only reinforces that notion. The amazing thing about this production is that the director found a way to use the threadbare story to make a huge emotional impact, especially in the second act, in a way that it simply never could when it was laden with the controversies and politics of the day.

While I could never get past the fact that I was watching fresh, clean, beautiful people pretend to be hippies - a disconnect made even more glaring whenever you’d look up at the actual, aging hippies in the band - the show is incredibly fun, the performances are stunning, and the direction is whip-smart.

So refreshing be reminded that Broadway - and the Broadway musical - used to attempt to challenge its audience instead of pandering. And so jarring to watch that show run headlong into the requisite post-show standing-ovation/sing-along that defines the current Broadway theatre. The show may be about 1967, but the production is firmly rooted in 2009.

I’m about 100 pages into writing a novel. Which feels great. And I’m excited about continuing. But the 2/3 of the book still left to write is a bit daunting. So in an effort to spur myself forward, I’m linking to the first chapter. I’m not promising anyone will like it, but I’m declaring publicly that I Will Finish. (Boy do I hate to fail in public.)

THEATRE #8 - One of those amazing “you had to be there and oh yeah also it was kind of gay” events that I love. Very exciting. Plus - I never thought I’d get to hear “My Chance To Survive The Night” from In Trousers performed live by Chip Zien!

But the entire night was humbling and inspiring - a sloppy genius and a parade of impossibly talented professionals performing his songs.

In Trousers and Assassins remain my ultimate director fantasy projects. Sigh.

They’re pieces of fresh, juicy grapefruit coated in a hard shell of sugary deliciousness and served on a stick on top of the Dirt Candy Mixed Green Salad (which also features, by the way, Grilled Cheese Croutons - which are exactly what they sound like. And yes, they are also delicious.) Both are pictured above. But:
